On this International Women's Day, we want to give a special recognition to all Guatemalan artisans, who with their work and talent have preserved the cultural traditions of their country and have contributed to the economy and development of their communities.
Today, more than ever, it is important to support and value the work of Guatemalan artisans and all women, to achieve a more just and equal society for everyone.
One group of women artisans in Guatemala who deserves recognition on this International Women's Day is the Mayan weavers of the highlands. These women create stunning textiles using backstrap looms, a traditional weaving technique that has been used in the region for centuries. They use locally sourced cotton and wool, as well as natural dyes made from plants, insects, and minerals, to create intricate patterns and designs. Many of the designs and patterns have deep cultural and spiritual significance, reflecting the Mayan worldview and mythology.

The leather is then cut into the desired shapes and sizes, and the artisans use a variety of tools to stamp, emboss, and stitch the leather to create intricate designs. The products are also sustainable, as the leather used is a byproduct of the meat industry and would otherwise go to waste.

One of the biggest challenges is the lack of access to markets, education and resources and the gender discrimination and undervaluation of their work. Many of the women live in rural areas with limited infrastructure and transportation which makes it difficult to reach new markets or attend trade shows and exhibitions.
They also struggle to access financing and other resources to grow their businesses. However, despite these obstacles, they have continued with their art and creativity, producing textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and other works of art that are recognized and appreciated worldwide.
So these women remain resilient and determined to succeed and are passionate about preserving their cultural heritage and passing their skills and knowledge down to future generations.They also play an essential role in creating economic opportunities for themselves and their families, as well as supporting their communities.
Let us celebrate and honor the many talented and hardworking Guatemalan artisans women and recognize their fundamental role in women's empowerment, and reiterate our commitment to supporting their work and cause.
